How to Optimize Home Builder Videos for SEO

Optimizing your existing home builder videos on YouTube for SEO is a fast, easy way to reach more online home shoppers. As you’ll see in this step-by-step guide it takes just a few minutes to do and doesn’t require any technical expertise.

Why video?

Videos create a competitive advantage for home builders on the web. If a home buyers types in “Dallas new homes” or “Michigan custom home builder” into the search engines, they are much more likely to click on a video result than a standard link.

As the second largest search engine in the world, YouTube (which is owned by Google) offers stronger SEO benefits than builders can achieve using their website or blog alone. This means that small builders can leverage low-cost, engaging videos to gain better search engine exposure – in some cases outranking larger builders with much bigger budgets.

Here’s what page one in Google looks like for the search term, “Edmonton new homes.” Which link would you be most likely to click on?


Now we know how powerful YouTube can be as a SEO tool, how can you make it work for you?

First, you’ll need a list of relevant keywords for your area. If you don’t have a list of keywords for your company or new home community, consider investing in keyword research as part of an overall SEO Analysis by a reputable, industry-focused firm.

Next, upload your video.


Once you’ve uploaded your video, the following screen will appear where you can enter the title and description of your video. Using the example of a basic virtual tour format, you can see that we’ve added the keyword “Luxury New Homes in Dallas” to the title. If we simply added something descriptive like, “The Tuscany Plan at Harbor Ridge,” we would have very little SEO benefit. That’s because there are more people searching for “Luxury New Homes in Dallas” than “The Tuscany Plan at Harbor Ridge.” This brings more people into the top of our sales funnel.


In addition to the title, we also added the keyword “Dallas home builder” to the video description. This gives us the opportunity to rank in search engines for two keyword phrases (“Dallas home builder” and “Luxury New Homes in Dallas”), which means our videos will reach even more buyers.

Note that we’ve also added tags to the video using keywords.

If you want to optimize videos that are already posted to your YouTube account, you can simply click edit. From there, a new screen will appear and you can edit your existing title and description with relevant keywords.
